My goals for the course Writing for Interactive Media included strengthening my narrative writing and posing story lines to cater to a specific audience. I achieved this by practicing narrative writing based on real life experiences of mine in a personal journal as well as writing multiple stories for an intended audience for the course assignments. I also aimed to think of several tactics to engage different kinds of audiences. I achieved this by researching how to write for a specific kind of audience (i.e., children, adults, individuals with limited education, African-American women, etc.) Lastly, I wanted to improve my analytical thinking to express a particular theme to an audience. My strategy was to pay close attention to specific details when writing and write as if the reader had no idea what I am discussing in order to dive deeper into the subject and provide a more meaningful understanding/comprehension.
Overall, this course has definitely improved my writing/story telling skills, taught me how to connect with my audience as well as how to cater to a specific audience. I came up with several story ideas that required planning, focus, editing, promotion and distribution skills. I feel as I come to complete each course in the New Media Journalism Master’s program, I become a better writer overall by clearly expressing my viewpoints and understanding exactly who I’m writing for so that they can comprehend it as needed. Creating my website/blog on Wix was a very beneficial part of this course because it served as a platform for me to express a topic that I am passionate about and would love to share with other women like myself.
Personally and professionally, a few take aways from the course would have to be the importance of outlining your ideas before you dive into a project. Before each major story we submitted, an outline showcasing the story’s newsworthiness and the 5W’s was required. Just as with anything in life, it is beneficial to move wisely and plan things out to ensure accurate and detailed results.
