My name is Aliyah Nickens, however many just simply refer to me as Lee! I was born and raised in Prince George's County, Maryland and love all things natural hair related! Back in 2013, I realized that I wanted to transition to having natural hair and avoid chemicals and heat in my strands. Persuaded by a friend, I began my journey by doing what is commonly known in the natural hair community as the "big chop." This means that I cut my hair completely off to gain a fresh start and reveal the texture of my hair straight from the roots. I started to buy natural hair products, (the first line I tried being Shea Moisture) get rid of my flat irons, and wear my hair in protective styles such as twist-outs to improve the overall health of my hair.
As time went on, I realized that I was passionate about natural hair because of many reasons: it positively altered my physical appearance, I received dozens of compliments on my hair like I never had before, my hair was strong, shiny, healthy and growing rapidly and I'd also receive questions and inquiries about how I achieved a certain style. It always excites me to assist a fellow natural woman to have healthy, beautiful hair or to persuade someone to start the transitioning process and feel beautiful about themselves - from the inside out.
My hope with my natural hair blog and YouTube channel is to help African-American women with hair similar to mine to exude beauty and confidence with their hair in its natural state. There used to be a negative stigma in regards to the natural hair of a black woman in that it was course, unmanageable, nappy, and not acceptable in society altogether. Over the years I've found that I've never looked more beautiful than when I wear my natural hair, and I plan to be a voice for many young African-American females who (like me) may initially be misunderstood, judged, or criticized for something that is out of their control.
“I love my hair because it’s a reflection of my soul. It’s dense, it’s kinky, it’s soft, it’s textured, it’s difficult, it’s easy and it’s fun. That’s why I love my hair.” ‑Tracee Ellis Ross
